What is Our National Interest in Nigeria?

Defeating militant Islam?  This may be in our long-term interest, but not short-term.  If this is our goal we had better have a much more robust and coherent strategy than we have thus far demonstrated.

Nigerian oil?  Do we need to protect their oil fields?  If so, we aren’t doing it.  They are our competitors.

Humanitarian? Sending the FBI to find the schoolchildren is stupid.  Sending in a small contingent of Green Berets might be futile.

As much as we might be tempted to put boots on the ground in Nigeria I don’t see where it would be to our advantage.

Homs falls to Assad: UN, Iranian officers secure Syrian rebels’ exit after Iranian hostages freed in Aleppo

This is the group that Obama supports.  They were just given diplomatic recognition by Obama.  What is our national interest in Syria?  Why are we supplying these anti-Christian terrorists with weapons?  When will they turn against us?

Syrian rebels evacuate Homs stronghold

A joint team of UN observers and Iranian Revolutionary Guards officers in civilian dress began evacuating some 2,000 Syrian rebels and their families from the Old City of Homs on Wednesday, May 7, so ending a cruel two-year siege. The rebels’ exodus from their last remaining stronghold represented another major victory for Syrian President Bashar Assad. As a rebel on his way out put it to Western reporters, “The rest of the world failed us.”

For two years, the armed Syrian opposition to Assad held onto Homs as the capital of their revolution, against the Syrian army’s ultimatum “to starve of surrender” and the most brutal assaults. Assad’s army bombarded the Old City of Homs with chemical weapons and barrel bombs for two years. Syrian tanks and heavy artillery methodically destroyed homes, street-by-street, house-by-house, driving the rebels and their families into underground cellars and tunnels, without food, water or medicine.

In despair, the rebels finally gave up. Their exit from from Homs Old City under UN and Iranian protection was the final admission of their inability to vanquish Assad and his main backers, the Iranians.

To secure Assad’s consent to their exit from this hell, the rebels agreed to the release of Iranian Revolutionary Guards officers held hostage by comrades in Aleppo, and to a withdrawal from a number of Shiite towns and villages in central and northern Syria.

debkafile’s sources note the grim symbolism in the timing of the final surrender of Homs Wednesday, just one day after the Obama administration declared it was granting the main Syrian opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition-SNC, permission to open a foreign mission in Washington under the Foreign Missions Act.

Obama administration officials, senior senators and congressmen vied against each other over a few minutes with opposition leader Ahmad Jarba, who was in Washington. The administration also announced that it was allocating an additional $27 million in “non-lethal assistance” for the rebels to combat Assad.

The dissonance is clear and deadly: the Obama administration is continuing its war on Assad in the halls of Capitol building, with no regard for what is happening on the ground in Syria.

The Pope’s new Coptic secretary: Islam is a “culture of death”

The Pope’s new Coptic secretary: Islam is a “culture of death”

By on May 4, 2014 at 3:06pm in dialogue, Vatican City with 79 Comments

yoannis gaidoThis is odd and surprising. It would seem most likely that the Pope wanted a secretary from the Islamic world to show his favorable view of Islam, and is unaware of Father Yoannis Lahzi Gaido’s previous statements. He will undoubtedly soon find out, however, if he hasn’t already, and what happens then will be interesting.

Here is Blazing Cat Fur’s modified Google translation of a German-language article: “The Pope’s new Coptic secretary: Islam is a ‘culture of death,’” Blazing Cat Fur, April 29, 2014 (thanks to Jamal):

Pope Francis has a new secretary who speaks Arabic and has very clear words about Islam.  It is no coincidence.

The new secretary, Father Yoannis Lahzi Gaido, is a Copt from Egypt, where Christians are a beleaguered minority who have had experience with Islam for 1,350 years.  His realistic view of Islam lacks any Western gloss.
[…]
The new secretary of Pope Francis is Coptic Catholic Christian and comes from the diplomatic service of the Vatican. In his CV, his critical remarks about Islam stand out…

Father Yoannis Lahzi Gaido was born in 1975. He visited the Diplomatic Academy of the Holy See and entered the diplomatic service in 2007. His first destination was the Apostolic Nuncio to Congo in Brazzaville…

[He came to the Pope’s attention] for his ability to speak Arabic…The Egyptian has become the interpreter of the Pope when he receives news from the Arab world.

Among the friends of the new secretary is another well-known Egyptian, the famous Muslim Magdi Cristiano Allam, a journalist and writer who converted to Christianity, and was baptized by Benedict XVI at the Easter Vigil in 2008 in St. Peter’s Basilica.

There were violent riots in various parts of the Islamic world, including fatalities, as a consequence of this.

Allam has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009.  After the election of Pope Francis, he took an increasingly critical position towards the Catholic Church, which he accuses of disregarding the warnings of Benedict XVI and adopting the “dictatorship of relativism” and appearing soft on Islam.  He says Islam is a “real threat to Christianity and the freedom of man.”

In his book “Grazie Gesù”(Thank you Jesus) that Allam published in the year of his baptism, he wrote about Father Yoannis Gaido:

Father Yoannis Lahzi Gaido, an Egyptian, deserves a special mention. [He was] for years chaplain to the church of Santa Domitilla in Latina and is currently Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Brazzaville.

I met him in Rome, and he has given me years of friendship and expressed his solidarity [with me].

He has a profound knowledge of the real Islam, as it is actually present in the hearts and minds of the majority of Muslims, and not distorted by the ignorance, naivety, good nature and ideological blindness of the West, which is exploited by mystifiers and hypocrites.

Father Yoannis shares my position on Islam completely and I was close to him as a brother Christian, as the organized media storm after my conversion, that tried to discredit and defame me, reached its climax.

Allam cited an interview that Father Gaido gave on 31 March 2008:

I have always tried to be a friend that respects the different religion of the other, without being afraid to tell the truth or to emphasize that Christianity is a call to freedom.

And when Magdi asked me about the Copts in Egypt, I did not hide the enormous difficulties under which Christians must live in places with a Muslim majority.

These difficulties are not caused by a few Islamists, but by a culture of death and violence that is based on very clear verses [of their scripture] that they quote, calling for violence and jihad, saying they should murder all who are different and killing [those who express] freedom of conscience.  Just to think differently is enough to be sentenced to death.

In 2010, after the anti-Christian massacre on New Year’s Day in Alexandria, Egypt, Father Gaido disagreed with the public declaration of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University. He [the Imam] strongly condemned the words of Pope Benedict XVI on January 2 as “interference” in internal Egyptian affairs.

Al-Azhar broke with the Vatican because of the entirely justified [sic! — RS] criticism of Benedict XVI, so different from the previous boring conversations of the past….

This guy explains why environmental justice doesn’t work in Africa.  He also makes the case why it doesn’t work in the US.  If we do what the environmenalists want, we will eliminate our industrial base.  We’ll no longer have income inequality because everyone will be poor.  Just like Africa is today.

George

……………

Every year environmental groups celebrate a night when institutions in developed countries (including my own university) turn off their lights as a protest against fossil fuels. They say their goal is to get America and Europe to look from space like Africa: dark, because of minimal energy use. But that is the opposite of what’s desired by Africans I know. They want Africa at night to look like the developed world, with lights in every little village and with healthy people, living longer lives, sitting by those lights. Real years added to real lives should trump the minimal impact that African carbon emissions could have on a theoretical catastrophe. I’ve spent my life on the foreign-policy left. I opposed the Vietnam War, U.S. intervention in Central America in the 1980s and our invasion of Iraq. I have headed a group trying to block U.S. arms and training for “friendly” dictators, and I have written books about how U.S. policy in the developing world is neocolonial.

Up to 30 killed in Odessa fire – deadliest incident in Ukraine crisis

And so it begins.

The fact that this was in Odessa is unfortunate.  It expands the need for Russia to take over Odessa and use it for a move into Moldova.

Office Depot Partners with ICLEI—Local Governments for Sustainability USA to Expand Green Business Challenge to More Cities Nationwide

The Sustainable Jersey movement is a direct outgrowth of this.  They get companies like Office Depot to give grants to municipalities that clear certain environmental hurdles.  If you read the Sustainable Jersey you will find articles like this  34 NJ Towns Receive Grants for Community-Based Sustainability Projects .

ICLEI is the organization that thinks these things up.  It was started expressly to implement the goals of Agenda 21 and they are doing just that.  This is an example.

How can we fight it?

1) Protest companies like Office Depot.  There ARE alternatives.

2) Make sure that your municipality is NOT an ICLEI member.  Remember that grants have strings.  ICLEI arranges the grants, so if your municipality does not participate…

3) Every municipality that participates in Sustainable Jersey must have a “green team”.  Most are populated by environmental activists but most are also lacking full membership.  Join your green team to provide common sense alternatives to the “sustainability” stuff that the left is proposing.

4) Subscribe to ICLEI newsletters and blogs to get advance notice of their initiatives.

5) Join organizations like Together North Jersey to provide conservative influence to the plans and policies they are proposing.

6) Try to prevent your municipality from taking “free” money in the form of grants from the Federal Government, State Government, NGO’s or corporations.  They all have strings that will reduce your freedom and increase your taxes.  Participation in your municipal government on boards, in council meetings, and even in electoral politics will help stem the tide.  Remind everyone that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

7) Join your local tea party.

Putin: Kiev military operation breaks Geneva accord

From DEBKAFile

Eastern Ukraine is clearly following the same pattern as Crimea.  How soon will it be that the Russians are “forced” to intervene.

Where did the rebels get surface to air missiles?  They are a quantum leap above RPG’s and aren’t just laying around.  This should be evidence of Russian meddling.  But no one is picking it up.

George

…………

A spokesman for Vladimir Putin said the two-week old Geneva agreement to defuse the Ukraine was no longer viable after Kiev launched its first serious offensive to retake the rebel-held city of Slavyansk Friday. In Washington, Barack Obama Friday accused Russia of violating international law. Standing alongside German chancellor Angela Merkel, he said the separatists were not peaceful protesters but armed militias. Both leaders warned Moscow that if Russian actions in Ukraine continued, and the May 28 election was disrupted, new sanctions would be imposed – this time on complete Russian sectors.

Two Ukrainian helicopters were shot down Friday over Slavyansk. One pilot was killed and a second captured. Ukraine’s security service said one was brought down by a surface-to-air missile. The rebel militia said Ukrainian troops had launched attacks on several checkpoints, but denied that they had taken control of nine checkpoints around the city. In the southern city of Odessa, three people were killed and 15 injured in clashes between separatists and “Euromaidan” activists.

Hamas TV celebrates jihad murder of Israelis: “Our harvest is your heads”

By

Robert Spencer

Now that Hamas and the PLO have reconciled, it ought to be understood that this is the general view that prevails among the entire “Palestinian” leadership. However, no doubt the fantasy will persist that the PLO/Fatah/the Palestinian Authority is “moderate,” while Hamas is “extremist.”
“Hamas TV celebrates killing: Our harvest is your heads,’” by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik, Palestinian Media Watch, April 24, 2014:
A video broadcast on Hamas’ Al-Aqsa TV yesterday shows actors playing Israeli soldiers entering the Gaza Strip, as a text on screen warns, “You will end up in Hell.” One by one the actor-soldiers are shot in the head, after which a Hamas sniper collects all the dog tags of the killed soldiers. A text appears on the screen: “Our harvest is your heads.”
Palestinian Media Watch reported that during the Gaza War, Hamas broadcast numerous TV clips celebrating the killing of Israeli soldiers and civilians.
Although the world was surprised by the unity agreement announced yesterday between Hamas and Fatah, the official PA daily had already reported nine days ago that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh announced a unity agreement was about to be finalized and implemented. In addition the Hamas head reiterated that kidnapping Israeli soldiers continues to be Hamas policy.
The following is the text in the official PA daily from April 16, 2014:
“Yesterday morning [April 15, 2014], Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of the deposed Hamas government in Gaza, said that the next stage would be the implementation of the reconciliation [between Fatah and Hamas] agreed on in the past, and the announcement of the end of the schism… Haniyeh emphasized that the next stage would be unlike those that preceded it, and would not [consist] of meetings alone, but of progress, through intensive steps, toward the completion of reconciliation and the implementation of that which has been agreed on.
He [Haniyeh] added: ‘The kidnapping of Israeli soldiers is part of the agenda of the Palestinian resistance and of the Hamas movement, and will contin

RAF Jet Chases Russian Planes Away From UK

And So It Begins

Two Russian bombers which flew close to UK airspace have been chased away by an RAF jet fighter.

The aircraft, believed to be Tupolev 95s, were spotted off the coast of northeast Scotland.

They were turned away from Britain when an RAF Typhoon was scrambled from Leuchars airbase, near Dundee.

Crews stationed there are on standby to intercept unidentified aircraft at a moment’s notice.

The incident comes amid heightened international tensions over the situation in Ukraine, following the annexation of Crimea by Russia last month.

Sky’s Defence Correspondent Alistair Bunkall said foreign planes often fly close to UK airspace, with eight similar incidents reported in 2013.
