The last Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigate based on the US western coast has been decommissioned, US Navy (USN) officials announced on 24 July.
USS Gary (FFG 51), homeported at Naval Base San Diego, California, was taken out of service during a ceremony on 23 July.
Built by Todd Pacific Shipyards, Gary ‘s keel was laid on 18 December 1982. The ship commissioned on 17 November 1984 and was in service for 31 years.
Gary returned from its final deployment in April 2015 after supporting US 4th Fleet in the US Southern Command area of operations, where it served as part of Operation Martillo, a multinational counter trafficking effort in waters off Central America.
